Ballymena United 1-0 Ards
JJB Sports Irish Cup - Tuesday, 19th January, 2010
A KEVIN Kelbie goal in extra-time was enough to see Ballymena United progress in the JJB Sports Irish Cup at the expense of Ards.

The Scot struck in the 101st minute when he burst into the penalty area to get on the end of a Nathan McConnell delivery to send a right-foot effort into the bottom corner of Andy McDonald's net.

United might have gone in front after 24 minutes when Gary Haveron got his head to a Philip Carson free-kick but was unable to keep the ball from going over while, at the other end, Kris Pike blasted a free-kick just past an upright.

Indeed, Ards might have led at the break had Michael Smith not been on hand to head away an Aaron McKee cross which looked destined to reach the well placed Darren Fitzgerald.

The deadlock was almost broken two minutes after the break after United defender Chris Ramsey crashed a header against the crossbar from another carson set piece.

Neither side really threatened for the remainder of normal time but with extra-time beginning to look equally as fruitless up popped Kelbie with what proved to be the decisive strike.
